Community leadership is the gateway to the advancement of rural communities in Jordan.

Rural communities in Jordan constitute a fundamental pillar of national development, possessing natural and human resources that can contribute to driving the national economy. However, these communities still face chronic challenges in employment and education, making them hostile environments for young people seeking better opportunities in larger cities. Community entrepreneurship emerges as an innovative tool to address these challenges and transform them into real opportunities for growth by creating new job opportunities and developing education and training to meet the demands of the modern labor market.

Rural areas suffer from high unemployment rates, particularly among youth and women, due to limited traditional job opportunities and the majority of the population’s reliance on traditional agriculture or government jobs. Women face additional barriers, such as a lack of flexible work opportunities and the absence of nurseries that support their economic participation.

In the field of education, the weak link between education and the labor market remains a major challenge. Curricula remain more theoretical than practical, leading to students graduating without the skills required by the labor market, such as technology and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, villages suffer from a lack of specialized training centers that help young people acquire modern skills such as digital marketing or smart agriculture, limiting their ability to compete and innovate.

Added to this is the difficulty of accessing financing. Many young people have promising entrepreneurial ideas but lack the necessary capital or collateral, while traditional loans remain unsuitable due to their high interest rates and complex terms. Furthermore, the poor marketing of rural products, such as olive oil, cheeses, and handicrafts, limits their spread and prevents them from reaching wider markets.

The centralization of development remains a major obstacle, as investments and services are concentrated in major cities, while rural areas are marginalized in development plans, widening the development gap between urban and rural areas.

To address these challenges, a set of possible measures and policies emerge, most notably:

Supporting small entrepreneurial projects for youth and women, and expanding flexible work opportunities through digital platforms.

Encouraging investors to establish productive projects in rural areas by providing tax incentives and logistical support.

Developing education by integrating innovation and entrepreneurship courses into curricula, and enhancing vocational and technical education in partnership with the private sector.

Launching mobile training centers and short practical workshops in cooperation with civil society institutions and international organizations.

Facilitating financing by establishing microfinance funds dedicated to rural areas, simplifying loan procedures, and encouraging crowdfunding for community initiatives.

Enhancing rural marketing by establishing national e-commerce platforms and training youth in digital marketing skills, in addition to organizing local and international exhibitions to promote rural products.

Finally, to ensure a fair distribution of development, it is necessary to achieve a balance in the distribution of projects and services between cities and rural areas, and to involve municipalities and local communities in the development planning process, ensuring the sustainability of initiatives and their real impact on people’s lives.

Community entrepreneurship is not just an economic concept; it is an integrated development path capable of transforming the challenges facing rural Jordan into real productive and educational opportunities. However, it requires supportive policies, flexible funding, and quality training that keeps pace with future requirements, so that rural Jordan can become a model of comprehensive and sustainable development.
