Youth and Isolation: How Did the Most Connected Generation Become the Loneliest? — “Al-Reef Cinema Space” Launches a Discussion on Rights and Development Regarding the Impact of Digital Connectivity on Young People’s Lives.

The Intermediaries of Change Center for Sustainable Development organized, as part of the “Rural Cinema Space” activities, a screening of a documentary film that explored the realities facing young people in an era of digital transformation, and the impact of social media and technology on human relationships, the sense of belonging, and patterns of communication with others and with oneself.

The film highlighted a paradox experienced by today’s generation: despite the unprecedented ease of communication and the ability to reach others with a single touch, the growing digital presence has contributed to the emergence of new forms of isolation and loneliness, creating invisible social distances between individuals.

The discussion was grounded in a rights-based and developmental approach that places young people at the heart of digital transformations, recognizing them as rights-holders and active participants capable of understanding and influencing their reality. It also emphasized the importance of safeguarding their right to communicate, express themselves, and belong, while providing safe spaces that enable them to engage in dialogue, reflection, and participation in issues that affect their daily lives.

Following the screening, a group of young people took part in an open discussion about their experiences with the digital world, reflecting on whether technology contributes to building new bridges between people or deepens isolation and weakens direct human relationships. They also exchanged ideas on ways to achieve a healthy balance between digital presence and human interaction, and to promote the conscious and safe use of technology.

The gathering provided a safe space for expression and mutual listening, and an opportunity to understand social isolation not merely as an individual experience, but as an issue linked to belonging, social justice, and access to relationships, support, and opportunities, particularly among young people in rural and marginalized communities.

This activity is part of the efforts of the “Rural Cinema Space” to utilize cinema, the arts, and cultural production as tools for informal learning, creative expression, and community dialogue, while empowering young people to understand their reality and contribute to shaping solutions that are more humane, inclusive, and sustainable.

The activity concluded with an interactive discussion that reflected young people’s interest in the impact of technology on their relationships and daily experiences, and highlighted the importance of continuing to provide youth spaces that encourage participation, critical thinking, and the building of social connections based on dignity, equality, and solidarity.
